A report by the Human Rights Commission suggests Asian people are perceived to be the group most discriminated against in New Zealand.

The report refers to a survey that found 28% of those asked believed Asians are discriminated against more than other races or social classes.

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres says that proportion has risen since the year before and could be a result of the recession. He says xenophobia can increase in a recession.

The Indian Association says the majority of Asian immigrants are highly qualified, which some people see as a threat.

President Ratilal Champaneri says there is a fear that Asian immigrants will take jobs from New Zealanders.
