NZ man arrested in Thailand for impersonating police

6:14 pm on 22 February 2010

A New Zealander has been arrested in Thailand and charged with impersonating an armed police officer and carrying live automatic firearms in public.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is aware of the arrest, but has no details as it has not been asked to provide any assistance.

The ABC reports the New Zealander is Robert McInnes, 47, who was arrested on Thursday when a team of police swooped on him in Pattaya.

Police had been acting on a tip-off that Mr McInnes had been parading around the town dressed in full SWAT police gear.
