The Canterbury Regional Council says it will review signage at the old Waimakariri River bridge, where a 15-year-old boy drowned on Tuesday afternoon.
Haenga Reece Puhipuhi-Albert failed to resurface after getting into difficulty at the popular swimming spot.
A warning sign was placed on a bridge pier after two people drowned in 2008, but Water Safety New Zealand says the latest drowning suggests the signage may not be appropriate.
A council spokesperson, Ross Campbell, says the sign is visible to swimmers from the bank, and there are other signs at each entrance road to the river.
Mr Campbell says the council will review the signage along with other options to try to lessen the risk of drowning.
He says educating swimmers to make good decisions about where to swim is important, but sometimes people ignore the warning signs.
