Truck company loses licence over safety concerns

11:02 am on 27 February 2010

The operating licence of a trucking company has been withdrawn because of safety concerns over its trucks - one of which has been described as lethal.

J Mahony & Sons, which operated 19 vehicles, had its Transport Service Licence revoked in a court ruling this week.

Based in Napier, the company has been operating since 1862.

The New Zealand Transport Agency says it has been monitoring the company since 2004.

National manager of commercial operators John Doesburg says the company had no maintenance programme in place. Some of its vehicles had not been maintained at all.

He says it's one of the worst cases of poor maintenance he's ever seen.
