New Zealand was first on the board with a Phil Burrows field goal in the first minute, but the team made too many unforced errors including failing in 2 of their 3 penalty corner attempts.
The Dutch led 3-1 at half time, and despite New Zealand improving in the second half with many good attacking opportunities, they were unable to convert.
In other matches, defending champions Germany trounced Canada 6-0 and Korea beat Argentina 2-1.
The Netherlands lead the group with 6 points after two rounds, Germany and Korea have 4 points, New Zealand 3 and Argentina and Canada none.
New Zealand's next match is against Korea on Saturday morning.
