A strong earthquake has struck southern Taiwan, causing panic among residents as buildings shook violently, triggering power blackouts and halting train services.
The 6.4-magnitude quake struck at 8.18am (local time) on Thursday in sparsely inhabited mountains about 70km northeast of the city of Kaohsiung at a depth of 5km.
The quake and was felt as far away as the capital Taipei in the north of the island.
At least 11 people have been injured. The quake also set off five fires, including one at a textile factory.
Earthquakes occur frequently in Taiwan, which lies on a seismically active stretch of the Pacific basin.
