NZ Chilean makes contact with home

6:10 am on 5 March 2010

A Chilean living in New Zealand say he has finally been able to find out that his family is safe after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake there on Saturday.

Jose Lopez from the city of Talca, close to the quake's epicentre, has been living in Auckland for the past seven years.

He says he was only able to confirm his family had survived on Thursday night; they told him the devastation is so bad he would not recognise his own city.

Mr Lopez says they told him not to come home, but he is anxious to do so and see what he can do to help.

The death toll in Chile is 802. Hundreds of people remain unaccounted for.
