Flexible working sought for grandparents

8:20 am on 6 March 2010

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust says it supports the idea of flexible working arrangements for grandparents who look after their grandchildren fulltime.

A new report by the Families Commission suggests grandparents now have more day to day responsibility for their grandchildren.

A Families Commissioner, Christine Rankin, is recommending all grandparents be offered leave to help with their grandchildren.

Ms Rankin says employers value older workers and need to consider giving them the same flexible working rights as parents.

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust says some of its members work fulltime and this, along with child-rearing, can be exhausting.
