Bad weather hampers Bluff oyster harvest

10:37 pm on 8 March 2010

A Bluff oyster seller is struggling to keep up with demand for this season's harvest due to bad weather.

Barnes Oysters in Invercargill says its boats have been out only twice since the season began last Monday.

Manager Graeme Wright says they went out on the first day, but had to return when winds in Foveaux Strait picked up.

However, a boat managed to go out on Friday and Mr Wright says people from shops and restaurants were queueing at the factory from 7am on Saturday.

He says the company prioritises most of its harvest for local suppliers, so oysters will be scarce in other parts of the country.
