Court hears of teacher's alleged grooming

9:39 pm on 8 March 2010

The High Court in Auckland has heard how a teacher allegedly groomed and manipulated a young boy into performing sexual acts.

Nicholas Baldwin, 62, is accused of committing indecent acts on a young person, sexual violation, and of grooming a young person for sex.

In a police interview, the boy, who was aged between 10 and 13 at the time of the alleged offences, spoke about how Mr Baldwin, a teacher at his school, started dropping him home, saying they did not want anyone to see because others might get jealous.

He also talked about how he was at the top of Mr Baldwin's friendship list, and this made him feel proud.

The Crown says these things show how well the accused groomed, coaxed and manipulated the boy.

Mr Baldwin denies any sexual misconduct and the defence suggests the young boy has had a tough life and was acting out some kind of fantasy.

The trial is set down for about a week.
