Hefty fines for flouting Kaitaia water ban

3:33 pm on 9 March 2010

People flouting Kaitaia water restrictions could be fined up to $20,000.

The tough penalties have been brought into force on Tuesday after months of drought reduced the town's main water source, the Awanui River, to a shallow trickle.

Far North District Council says Kaitaia could be facing the unthinkable prospect of running dry in a week's time, if nothing changes.

Anyone who uses a hose to water gardens and lawns, or wash cars, windows, decks or paths, risks the hefty fine.

Filling or topping up spas and swimming pools is banned, and commercial car and truck-washing businesses are on notice.

The bans will on Wednesday extend to the Hokianga communities of Omapere and Opononi.

Conditions are also dry in the Hawke's Bay and Auckland regions.
