US troops being withdrawn from Haiti

9:27 pm on 9 March 2010

Thousands of United States troops are starting to pull out of Haiti, where they have been helping maintain order after January's devastating earthquake.

More than 200,000 people died.

There are 11,000 US soldiers still in the country and that will soon be cut back to a much smaller as yet unspecified number.

A UN peacekeeping force and the Haitian police will take over from the Americans.
