Rescue procedures sound, says official

Land Search and Rescue chief executive Hayden Smith says a coroner's recommendation to change how decisions are made about launching rescues is unnecessary.

Coroner Tim Scott has recommended the decision should not be made by one person alone.

Mr Scott gave the advice while presenting his findings into the deaths of the head of Te Papa, Seddon Bennington, and his tramping companion Marcella Jackson.

They died of hypothermia on the Tararua Ranges in July last year and their bodies were found four days later.

Mr Smith says a final decision on whether a rescue mission should go ahead is made in consultation with advisors.

He says standard operating procedure usually involves checking with other people for some sort of peer review, so that the outcome suggested can be challenged.

Mr Smith says factors such as the weather and lighting conditions are taken into account before launching a rescue, and this can cause delay.
