Police are awaiting analysis of a blood sample taken from a woman who sped away from an alcohol checkpoint before a fatal crash in Blenheim.
The woman's car collided with another, killing the 51-year-old motorist on Friday night, at a roundabout at the intersection of Hutcheson St and Nelson St, 400 metres away from the checkpoint
Police say they have completed their examination of the crash scene and are carrying out tests to establish whether the 20-year-old had been drinking.
She was treated at Wairau Hospital and discharged.
Police say the victim is a local woman and are contacting her family before releasing her identity.
