Cathedral protester faces trespass charge

6:43 pm on 26 March 2010

A Christchurch man who barricaded himself inside the city's cathedral overnight in a protest at ACC has been charged with trespass.

Neville Toohey locked himself into a viewing platform in the cathedral tower 36 metres above the square on Thursday and displayed a banner publicising his website.

He was escorted by police from the building on Friday afternoon as more than 100 spectators shouted words of support.

Neville Toohey says ACC denied his claim for back surgery nine years ago and has an mentality of rejection.

He says it's worth paying a fine if his protest helps to improve the accident compensation system.
