Conflicting evidence on drinking at Dunedin bar

8:42 pm on 29 March 2010

The Liquor Licensing Authority has heard conflicting reports about the behaviour at a private function at Dunedin's Captain Cook Tavern last year.

Police are seeking the cancellation or suspension of the Captain Cook's on-licence and the general manager's certificate held by Cody Ronald Browne.

The quiz night was organised by the Society of Otago University Law Students, which subsidised drinks so members could buy jugs of beer for $3.

Police say that price encouraged excessive consumption, and that the tavern allowed intoxicated people on its premises.

One student, William Buchanan, said he was the sober driver that night and that three of his friends drank 18 jugs of beer between them at a cost of $3 per jug.

He described how they vomited repeatedly at the bar and on the drive home.

But in written statements, three staff from Otago University's Law Faculty, said they did not notice any excessive intoxication, with one describing the event as sedate.
