Police have found a knife they believe may be linked to the death of an Oamaru teenager on Thursday night.

William Peter Lewis, 16, of Oamaru, died after being stabbed near the intersection of Exe St and Thames St at about 10pm.

A 16-year-old boy appeared in the Oamaru District Court on Saturday charged with murder.

The accused was remanded in the custody of Child, Youth and Family and will reappear in the Palmerston North Youth Court on 9 April.

All other details about him are suppressed, because of his age.

Detective Sergeant Malcom Inglis says the two teenagers knew each other but were not friends.

Police are asking people in Oamaru to continue to contact them with any information or if they find anything unusual, including other knives, while a forensic examination of the knife is completed.
