Bodies remain in caravan as police investigate

11:29 pm on 5 April 2010

Police say the bodies of two people found dead in a caravan on the outskirts of Nelson will remain at the scene overnight.

Police say uniformed officers attended first, after reports of gunshots at the Maitai Valley Motor Camp at about 11.30am on Monday.

They say camp managers were already evacuating people. The bodies of a man and woman, aged in their mid-thirties to early forties, were discovered after the Armed Offenders Squad was called out.

Tasman District Commander, Superintendent Gary Knowles, says police believe they've found the weapon involved, but he can't confirm whether it's a gun.

A guard is watching the caravan overnight, and forensic experts will examine it on Tuesday. Post-mortem examinations are also due to be carried out on Tuesday.

Superintendent Knowles says police aren't looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths, but are speaking to next of kin to work out what happened.

Part of the adjoining Waahi Taakaro Golf Course was also evacuated.

Players at the golf course, on Maitai Valley Rd, reported two shots being fired, then another one later.

Golf course custodian John Moore says a number of Armed Offenders Squad officers were at the road blocks, one armed with an automatic rifle.

By early afternoon, roadblocks had been removed from the scene, and an ambulance which went to the camping ground, also on Maitai Valley Rd, just after midday had returned.

Campers were allowed to return to their sites.
