German car exports up

German car exports rose by more than half in March compared with a year earlier, but domestic car sales fell by a quarter.

Official figures show Germany exported 419,400 cars in March, while overseas orders for future deliveries were up by more than 28%.

However, domestic sales fell by 27% to 295,000 as demand fell due to the end of a car scrappage scheme, which closed in September last year.

The BBC reports the fall in domestic sales was expected, as the comparative figure for last March was boosted by the scrappage scheme.

Germany is the world's second biggest vehicle exporter behind China.
