Nine people are dead and at least 25 are injured after a train derailed in northern Italy.

The regional train came off the rails about 7am local time on Monday when a landslide hit one of its two cars near the town of Merano, according to a fire official.

The railway line, inaugurated in 2005, is considered one of the most modern tracks in the country, AFP reports.
