Northland councils divided over local govt reform

6:43 am on 15 April 2010

Two Northland councils are urging the public to think about options for local government reform, despite a lack of regional unity on the issue.

The Whangarei and Far North District mayors want to dismantle the Northland Regional Council, and form two unitary authorities, but the Northland Regional Council and Kaipara District are refusing to take part in the process.

Whangarei District Council says the government is sure to look at other regions once the Auckland reforms are complete and Northland should take the intiative.

However, Local Government Minister Rodney Hide says the Goverment has no intention of rolling out further reforms.
