Police search for caller after Auckland bomb scare

8:00 pm on 16 April 2010

Police are working to identify a man who sparked a bomb scare in central Auckland call centre, causing three branches of a bank to be evacuated.

A call was received at an ANZ call centre shortly after 3pm on Friday, causing concern there might be an explosive device in the bank's Queen Street branch.

The building was searched using bomb sniffer dogs and the all-clear was given just before 6pm.

Police say there will be an investigation to find out who made what they are describing as a hoax call.

Senior Sergeant Ben Offner says the man who made the call spoke clearly and sounded well-educated.

Mr Offner says threats of this nature have the potential to do huge damage to the city.
