Strong sales of the iPhone helped Apple's profits leap by 90% in the first quarter of 2010.

In results issued after US markets closed on Tuesday, Apple said it made a net profit of more than $US3 billion. Revenue rose 49% to $US13.5 billion the three months to the end of March.

Apple says it has sold about nine million iPhones - more than double the figure from a year earlier.
