Somalis charged with piracy

Eleven Somalis have been charged in the United States with piracy.

They appeared in court in Virginia on Friday afternoon following attacks on two US warships off the east coast of Africa.

The charges include piracy, attack to plunder a vessel, assault and use of a firearm.

Five were captured on 31 March when shots were fired at a US Navy ship from their boat.

Another six were arrested in waters near Djibouti on 10 April.

They have been held since then on US ships off Somalia.

Last year, a Somali teenager was charged with piracy after an attempt to seize a US ship in the Indian Ocean.
