Toll road fee to be extended to motorcyclists

4:48 pm on 26 April 2010

Motorcyclists will have to pay to use the Northern Gateway toll road, north of Auckland.

So far they have been able to use it for free but will soon be charged the same as cars and other light vehicles - $2 per trip.

The Transport Agency says it is a matter of fairness, as motorcyclists get the same benefits and time savings as other road users.

However bikers' rights organisation, BRONZ, says motorcyclists should not have to pay as much as cars as they cause less road damage and take up less space.

A spokesperson Les Mason says the group is considering taking action to express its disappointment at the decision.

The Transport Agency says the new fee will be introduced in the middle of the year.

Motorcyclists make up more than 1% of all trips on the Northern Gateway.
