Al-Qaeda blamed for Yemen attack on British envoy

Al-Qaeda has been blamed for an attack on Britain's ambassador in Yemen.

The suspected suicide bomber threw himself at the convoy of the ambassador as it drove through the capital, Sanaa, the BBC reports.

Ambassador Tim Torlot is safe, UK officials have confirmed.

One person - believed to be the attacker - was killed, according to security sources in Yemen.

The attack bore all the "hallmarks of al-Qaeda", the Yemeni interior ministry said in a statement.

The British Foreign Office said it had closed the embassy to the public and there are mounting fears that Yemen is becoming a leading al-Qaeda haven.

Mr Torlot was reported to have been on his way to the embassy when the attack happened, in an area of eastern Sanaa said to be popular with militants.
