Water consumption falling in Auckland

Water consumption in Auckland has fallen by 1.5% in the past week since warnings that cutbacks were needed.

Regional supplier Watercare Services is asking residents to make further savings to avoid restrictions next summer.

It wants them to cut water use by about 4% to get the storage lakes back to normal levels for this time of year.

Watercare Services networks manager Mark Bourne says the storage lakes are 58.8% full, about 10% less than the normal average for about now.

Mr Bourne says lake levels will drop to about 50% by the end of May if there is not much rain and if they are still like that by September, it is likely that restrictions will be imposed.
