An education expert is urging caution over the introduction of course endorsement in the NCEA next year.
Students who gain excellence or merit for 14 credits in a course will get an endorsement for their achievement.
Education Minister Anne Tolley says the strengths of students will be made clearer as a result.
But the Dean of Education at Victoria University, Professor Dugald Scott, says a lot depends on how schools construct courses.
He says they could have different courses for subjects like maths, and that might confuse people.
Qualifications Authority deputy chief executive Bali Haque says course endorsement reflects what schools already do, and the change should not be confusing.
