Consumer confidence rises in poll

Consumers are feeling more optimistic about the economy's prospects, with a net 40% of people expecting to be financially better off next year.

The ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence Index posted its third successive monthly rise in May, climbing four points to reach 126 points.

A reading above 100 indicates optimism.

ANZ economist Steve Edwards says the rise reflects a general turnaround in sentiment about the domestic and international economy.
