Hastings police crack down on fake IDs

9:48 am on 22 May 2010

A police crackdown in Hastings on under 18-year olds using fake identification cards to get into bars has resulted in about 30 court appearances this month.

The action was taken after bar staff alerted police that a higher than usual number of forged documents were being presented.

Senior Sergeant Ross Smith says most offenders have been using their drivers licences and altering the birth date.

He says forgery can result in up to 10 years imprisonment, and young people need to be aware of the serious consequences of forging documents.
