Exchange reform promised by China

China has promised to continue to reform its exchange rate policies.

President Hu Jintao says he is seeking gradual progress on reforming the exchange rate of the yuan.

The United States argues China's currency, which is pegged to the US dollar, is being kept artificially low, making Chinese goods cheaper than they should be, increasing the US trade deficit with China.

In return, China wants the US to lift restrictions on high tech exports and make it easier for Chinese companies to invest in the United States.
