Flood damage being assessed in Otago

5:56 pm on 2 June 2010

Damage from Otago's floods is likely to be expensive to repair.

Waitaki District Council says about 60 bridges need to be assessed.

Roading manager Geoff Young says at least one has collapsed, and others are impassable because their approaches have washed away.

Teams of contractors and engineers are checking every road. Meanwhile, about 50 roads remain closed.

However, the council says 25 properties at Waitaki rendered virtually inaccessible last week are no longer isolated.

But hundreds of people remain affected by the closure of several rural water supplies.

Until further notice, all water will have to be boiled before drinking, due to contamination by silt.

Clutha District also experienced extensive flooding and the flood bill for Dunedin City has been estimated at about $250,000.
