Wool prices pick up

6:10 am on 4 June 2010

Wool prices have picked up again, after softening at the North and South Island wool sales last week.

Wool Services International says a small selection of fine short lambs wool received the most interest on Thursday, fetching up to 15% more, despite a stronger New Zealand dollar.

Finer carpet type fleece wool was also strongly contested, rising in price by 6%. Coarse fleece was up to 4% dearer.

Mid micron fleece fetched up to 4% more, while prices for fine crossbreds increased by between 1.5% - 3.5%.

More than three-quarters of the 14,000 bales put up for auction were sold.

Next week's scheduled sale has been cancelled due to recent wet weather around the country disrupting shearing.
