Adventure tourism review with Minister

10:43 pm on 10 June 2010

A review into the adventure tourism industry ordered by the Government after fatal accidents has been handed to Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson.

It could be up to a month before the findings are made public.

The review was announced last year by Prime Minister John Key in response to a series of accidents in recent years.

Two year ago, Englishwoman Emily Jordan drowned in the Kawarau River in Central Otago while on a river boarding trip.

The same year, six Elim Christian College Students and their teacher died on a canyoning trip at the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuit Centre in the Central North Island.

The review, led by the Department of Labour, takes a comprehensive look at the adventure tourism sector and its safety practices.

The minister says she hopes to be able to take recommendations from the report to Cabinet within the next month.
