Somali militants vow flogging for watching World Cup

Militants in Somalia have threatened football fans with a public flogging - and even death - if they are caught watching the World Cup on television.

Gangs of Islamic extremists are reported to be patrolling areas they control looking for people watching games.

On Saturday, militants killed two people as they attacked a house where people were watching a game.

A spokesperson for one group says fans are wasting their time and money by watching what he calls mad men jumping up and down on a pitch.

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh the government has asked factory owners to suspend operations during the evenings so there is enough electricity for people to watch the World Cup on television.

The request follows riots over power cuts that interrupted the coverage.
