Unions in France have staged nationwide strikes in protest at government plans to raise the retirement age to 62 and reform state pensions.

Organisers predicted that more than a million people would take to the streets.

Thousands of transport workers walked off the job, hitting train, plane, metro and bus services, while civil servants, teachers and some private sector empoloyees also went on strike.
