Akaroa cut off by huge slip of mud and trees

People in a Banks Peninsula township have opened their homes on Sunday to those left stranded after a slip closed the main route between Christchurch and Akaroa.

State Highway 75 will remain closed overnight on Sunday between Tai Tapu and Little River by the slip, which brought down mud and trees.

Little River Hotel owner, Mark Smith, says it was a full house at his, and other bed and breakfasts, in the small town on Sunday.

He says the community has also taken in about 10 people, who can't make it back to Christchurch.

The owner of the Grand Hotel in Akaroa, Eric Ryder, says the road's only been closed three times in 20 years, and the townspeople are not concerned.

Police in Christchurch say contractors will work through the night to clear the slip, and the road is expected to reopen by 7.30am Monday.

Motorists are urged not to use any alternative routes over the hills as conditions are treacherous.
