Christchurch's AMI Stadium has joined other New Zealand sporting venues in banning vuvuzelas.

The Canterbury Rugby Union consulted with other sporting codes and listened to feedback from fans before deciding to ban the plastic horns, the sound of which pervaded all games at the football World Cup in South Africa.

Stadium manager Bryan Pearson says that vuvuzelas have joined the list of other prohibited items like air horns, sound amplifiers, whistles and other musical instruments.

Other New Zealand sporting venues, such as Eden Park, already ban the horns, as do major overseas venues like Wimbledon and the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
