Policemen to do community work for assault

Two Dunedin police officers have been sentenced to community work for the assault of a man they were arresting.

Constables Brenton David Rooney and Duncan Roy Hollebon were sentenced in the Dunedin District Court to community work and ordered to pay $500 compensation to their victim.

The Crown prosecutor had sought a jail sentence for the policemen.

On 15 February 2009, the officers assaulted Daniel Wiel, who had been speeding on his motorcycle without lights on.

Rooney was found guilty of injuring with intent and was sentenced to two months' community detention with a night curfew, and 100 hours community work.

Hollebon was found guilty of assault with intent to injure and was sentenced to 160 hours community work.
