Malaria-resistant mosquito engineered in US

Scientists in the United States have created a new strain of mosquito that is resistant to malaria.

There are about 250 million cases of the potentially fatal disease in humans each year.

The researchers at the University of Arizona introduced a gene that affects the insect's gut so the malaria parasite cannot develop there, so the mosquito cannot spread the disease.

Researchers say the genetic modification also means the mosquitos don't live as long.

It will be several years before the malaria resistant mosquitoes are released into the wild, they say.
