Treaty settlements and the foreshore and seabed review were two of the topics for discussion when the Attorney-General met the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Monday.
Attorney-General Chris Finlayson says he gave Professor James Anaya, who is on a week-long visit to New Zealand, an overview of the Government's plans to repeal the Foreshore and Seabed Act.
Mr Finlayson says he welcomes the scrutiny from the UN.
Lawyer Moana Jackson, who worked with Professor Anaya on drafting the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, told Waatea News that Professor Anaya already has a working knowledge of the existing foreshore and seabed legislation.
He will also be interested in the fallout from the so-called "terrorist" raids on Tuhoe, Mr Jackson says.
After meeting Government officials early in the week, Professor Anaya will attend a hui at Te Tii marae in Waitangi on Wednesday.
A visit by the previous UN Special Rapporteur in 2005 resulted in a report that was critical of some government policy, including the Foreshore and Seabed Act.
