US imposes more sanctions on North Korea

9:08 pm on 21 July 2010

The United States will impose further sanctions on North Korea after the sinking of a South Korean warship that left 46 sailors dead.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the sanctions on a visit to South Korea with US Defence Secretary Robert Gates.

Mrs Clinton says the sanctions are designed to prevent Pyongyang from funding weapons programmes and spreading weapons of mass destruction.

She says they aim to curb the North's sale and procurement of weapons and related material, and its procurement of luxury goods.

The US and South Korea accuse the North of torpedoing the ship near the disputed Yellow Sea border in March - a charge the North denies.
