Cabinet to consider changes to drink-driving laws

8:00 pm on 24 July 2010

Transport Minister Steven Joyce says potential changes to drink-driving laws will make a difference to road safety but drivers still need to take responsibility for their actions.

Mr Joyce says Cabinet will make decisions in the next few weeks on laws relating to people who drive drunk or impaired by drugs.

He says the proposals being considered include devices which prevent a repeat offender's car starting if the driver has been drinking, and nil alcohol limits for repeat offenders and young people.

Mr Joyce says reducing the legal driving limit from 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milligrams of blood to 50 milligrams is another option, as is doing more research on those who have more accidents.
