The Wainuiomata Community Board says it will petition the Government for a moratorium on new liquor outlets, after another was given approval to open in the suburb of Hutt City.
On Friday, the Liquor Licensing Authority granted Nischay's Discount Liquor permission to open, but with the conditions that 'discount' is dropped from the name of the shop and alcohol is sold at recommended retail prices.
Board chair Margaret Willard says an appeal against the decision is being considered, as well as action to get the Government to change liquor licensing laws.
She says the main concern about the store is that it's stocked full of ready-mixed drinks known as RTDs which could fall into the hands of under-age drinkers.
Wainuiomata has about 17 liquor outlets, for a population of 17,000.
