The Government has announced moves to encourage foster carers to take children into their homes permanently.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says the Government will provide financial assistance as well as extra support to navigate the administrative process for taking on a child indefinitely.

The scheme, Home for Life, will include a include a $2500 payment for clothing and other costs, and money towards legal fees.

Foster parents will still be able to get the unsupported child benefit, as well as respite care so they can have breaks from the children.

The move has been welcomed with a foster parents group saying the new provisions will provide stability for the children, whilst providing the back-up support of Government services.
