A recent survey suggests more than a quarter of New Zealanders support making Te Reo Maori compulsory in schools.
Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori (the Maori Language Commission) is heartened by the result.
The survey by Research New Zealand found 38% of people support compulsory Maori language education in schools.
Some 500 people were surveyed: those in favour were aged between 15 - 34 and included tangata whenua, Pacific Island people and pakeha.
Te Taura Whiri says the findings show people's attitudes and acceptance of Maori concerns and issues are maturing.
But it says there is still work to be done because 38% is a minority of the population.
