Safety programme for older drivers to be trialled

A long awaited programme to improve the road safety of older drivers is set to be trialled in the next few months.

The Transport Agency has developed the Mature Road User Toolkit, to fill the void left by the axing, a year ago, of the Safe With Age programme.

It will cater to people aged 70 and older.

The Transport Agency says its guidelines and learning modules will be used by approved organisations, such as local and regional councils.

The toolkit will be trialled from next month in three yet to be determined areas - but two will be communities deemed to be at-risk areas.

It's expected the new programme, which has cost $40,000 to develop, will reach up to 20,000 older drivers every year.

Its predecessor, Safe With Age, was stopped because it wasn't reaching enough people.
