Phoenix football crowds higher than rugby in Wellington

Early season crowd numbers are higher for the Phoenix football team than the Lions rugby team at Westpac stadium in Wellington.

Both played home matches this weekend, with the footballers drawing almost 2500 more supporters than the rugby team.

Some 9500 turned up to the Phoenix game against Central Coast Mariners on Sunday, which was on a par with this time last year.

The Lions drew a crowd of just over 7000 for their match against Waikato on Saturday night - significantly down on the crowds of 14,00 and 18,000, when they held the Ranfurly Shield last August.

The Yellow Fever supporters club says the Phoenix is riding high on a successful season last year and the All Whites' efforts at the World Cup.

However, the Lions have sold 7800 season tickets - an increase of 1500 on last year.

That's significantly more than the 3400 Phoenix season tickets sold, although that's up by 1000 on last year.
