Iwi argue claims for Little Barrier Island

Two iwi claiming ownership of the Little Barrier Island are putting their arguments before the Maori Affairs Select Committee.

The committee is holding hearings at Leigh, north of Auckland, on Monday.

Little Barrier Island (Hauturu) is to be given to a sub tribe, Ngati Manuhiri, as part of its Treaty settlement.

But larger iwi Ngati Wai also lays claim to the island and says the Crown is doing the deal without them.

Some of the issues being put before MPs include conflicts of interest, poor representation of the people and a lack of consultation
