Govt hopes Ngati Toa will settle by Christmas

6:29 am on 5 November 2012

The Government hopes an iwi with Wellington ties, Ngati Toa, can sign their settlement deed by the end of the year, despite the process being delayed several times.

The Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust has taken High Court action against the Crown package set out for Ngati Toa, which is worth around $75 million.

Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson says the trust has already put off the signing by calling an urgent Waitangi Tribunal hearing last month, which was unsuccessful.

He says this further action is frustrating, and tiring for everyone.

Mr Finlayson says the best case scenario is that the judge reaches a rapid decision and the deed can be signed in Porirua before Christmas.

The court proceedings begin on 12 November.
